An animal shelter is helping take care of animals left stranded in the aftermath of the vicious wildfires in Agia Anna on the island of Evia on Friday.

“We first took the dogs by car to the next village and then we had to take the horses. A trailer came to take the horses, nine horses and two donkeys but it broke so we had to transfer them by foot to the next village. It was night, a lot of people were panicking. There was no police or firefighters or anything. It was very difficult, we were lucky,” a volunteer explained.

In recent weeks, several animal shelters have popped up across Greece in an attempt to rescue and take care of animals affected by the country’s wildfires, the worst faced by the country in decades.
