Greece: Wildfires leave behind trail of destruction on island of Evia

Massive wildfires have left a trail of destruction and severe damage to nature and villages in the region of Evia in Greece.

Footage from the island filmed on Thursday shows completely burned-out residential houses, cars and motorcycles, damaged chapels and graveyards, and soil covered in ashes from the forest fires.

The blazes have also destroyed local infrastructure including roads and electricity networks.

After eight consecutive days of fighting the flames, firefighters and volunteers have brought the fires under control and were able to extinguish most of those burning on Evia.

More than 2,000 people have been evacuated from the island, as the country has been battling devastating wildfires for nearly two weeks due to hot weather and long-lasting drought.
