Guinea: Coup leader promises "no witch hunts" at meeting with incumbent ministers

Guinea’s coup leader Mamadi Doumbouya said incumbent ministers will continue holding their positions until a new cabinet is announced, speaking at a meeting with officials at the presidential palace in Conakry on Monday.

“There will be no witch hunts but justice will be the compass that will guide every Guinean citizen,” said Doumbouya before justifying the ousting of president Conde.

“We found ourselves in a situation of injustice, corruption, patronage, nepotism. The deprivation of individual and collective freedoms was commonplace. The deepest evil today is the distrust of citizens observed towards others. Policies have weakened the social fabric. To prevent the country from falling into the pit, we, the National Committee for Unification and Development, have taken on our responsibilities like any Republican soldier,” said the coup leader.

On Sunday, Doumbouya along with other army figures announced on state television the arrest of former president Alpha Conde following reports of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace. Conde’s whereabouts were unknown, but videos of him in custody surfaced online.

The army later announced a national curfew until further notice, with Doumbouya leading the country as the head of the National Committee for Unification and Development, with a government of national unity expected to be announced soon.
