Supporters of Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar rallied in Benghazi on Tuesday, celebrating his announcement to run as president in the upcoming elections.
Protesters could be seen celebrating in the streets while sporting banners in support of Haftar. The field commander announced his candidacy in Benghazi via televised address, promising to tackle corruption in the country, while highlighting the importance of the upcoming elections.
77-year-old Haftar will compete with Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Muammar Gaddafi, who announced his candidacy on Sunday. Libya’s elections are due to be held on 24 December 2021, after having been postponed twice since 2018 due to the Second Libyan Civil War.
