Libya: Military commander Haftar announces presidential candidacy

Khalifa Haftar, a military leader who played a major role in the Libyan civil war, announced that he will run in the December 24 presidential election, at a press conference at the elections commission in Benghazi on Tuesday.

Parliamentary and presidential elections in December are hoped to end the decade-long conflict that has devastated the country since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising which ousted then-leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Haftar was a military commander until he stepped away from his role in September temporarily still holds a lot of power in the eastern part of Libya.

Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi’s son announced his candidacy on Sunday.

An interim government currently governs Libya, and the outcome of the upcoming elections will be crucial to define the country’s future.

The next stage is difficult, and it needs a man… We ask all Libyans to make the right choice that they will not regret again, and that’s all I say, thank you and peace be upon you”.
