Haiti declares state of emergency after thousands of inmates escape prison

A state of emergency has been declared in Haiti after armed gangs attacked the country’s largest prison.

About 3,700 inmates at the Port-au-Prince prison escaped and another prison, in nearby Croix des Bouquets, was also stormed.

Following the jailbreak, at least 12 people have been killed in the capital and nearly 15,000 people have been forced to leave their homes.
