Haiti Gangs Launch Deadly Attacks on Upscale Neighbourhoods

At least a dozen people have been killed after armed gunmen raided two upscale neighbourhoods in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Crowds gathered after some of the dead were left on the street.

The gunmen had looted homes, forcing residents to flee as some called radio stations pleading for police. But as civil order has broken down in recent weeks, there is little chance of a police response.

Many expressed their horror and outrage at what is happening to their nation.

A coalition of criminal groups, led by gang leaders such as Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Chérizier, dominate the streets. They say they want to lead a revolution in Haiti and take power, but they have caused widespread death and destruction.

Hundreds of thousands have now been displaced by the conflict, but there are few safe places to flee to. Haiti’s only neighbour, the Dominican Republic, has continued deporting thousands of Haitians fleeing the fighting.

Many now fear Haiti is edging ever closer to a state of complete anarchy with each passing day.
