Ahead of the one-year memorial anniversary of late footballer Diego Maradona, business appears to be booming around the cemetery where the Argentine icon is buried. Local store owners paid tribute on Wednesday to the positive impact Maradona’s legacy continues to have on the area and its people, as evidenced by rising tourist visits and a flourishing economy.

Aerial photos of the cemetery show a great many gravestones within the historic walls. On the outer facade of the cemetery wall, artist Damian Ferro has painted a mural in honour of Maradona, who died last year.

Neighbouring business owners confirm that Maradona as a character has left behind a legend that continues to breathe life into the area after his death.

“He continues to help after he dies, he is continuing to help us humble people, here he is passing his hand after death, because the truth is that many things have progressed,” said Johnny Ecker, the owner of a clothing store across from the cemetery.

“There is more work in this area, the truth is that Diego is unique in the world. There is no one else like Diego,” he added.

The 1986 World Cup winner died on November, 25, 2020 at the age of 60 and was buried at the private cemetery Jardin de Bella Vista alongside his parents.
