Hong Kong’s independent news outlet Citizen News announced its closure on Tuesday due to ‘an increasingly tough environment’ for the media, after multiple prominent independent outlets were shut down in recent months.

According to the website’s Chief Editor Yeung Kin-Hing, the decision was taken amid the ‘uncertainty’ and an impossibility to ‘get a clear assuring picture’.

Citizen News stopped operating a week after independent news site Stand News was shut down following a massive police raid involving 200 officers, resulting in the arrest of seven employees and the media’s assets being frozen.
