Polls opened in Hong Kong as the Chinese special administrative region hosted its first ever ‘patriot’s only’ elections on Sunday, with select voters seen entering a polling station in Sha Tin Town Hall.

Several thousands of voters will choose a new 1,500-seat ‘patriots only’ Election Committee, following an overhaul of Hong Kong’s electoral system.

Voter participation has dropped significantly when compared to 2016, when over 260,000 voters took to the polls in order to choose the Election Committee.

Thousands of police officers were deployed throughout polling stations to safeguard the election process.

The new Election Committee is set to choose under half of the city’s legislators in December, with remaining seats either being chosen by special interests or elected directly.

SOUNDBITE:

SOT, Stanley Li Sai-wing, Election candidate (Cantonese): “Even if the general public do not have right to vote, it’s easier than before as long as we can help to bring their voices into the government.” *LOOSE TRANSLATION*
