‘Illegal Sky Lantern Causes MASSIVE Fire in Brazil’

A fire in Brazil, caused by an illegal sky lantern, burned for a second day on Monday.

By Sunday afternoon, it had burned across more than half of the Juquery state park and it had already rained ash on São Paulo, 39 kilometers (24 miles) away.

More than 100 firefighters have been called in to battle the flames.

The Sao Paulo region is experiencing a dry winter. Experts think this has facilitated the fire’s spread.

Brazilians often send burning lanterns into the sky, even though it’s punishable by fines or even prison.

Sao Paulo state officials list the balloons among the top three causes of forest fires each year.

Six people were arrested Sunday night in connection with this case, but they were released hours later on bail.
