‘Imminent BLOODBATH’: Myanmar Military Coup at Point of No Return as UN Warns of Civil War’

The United Nations envoy to Myanmar has urged a closed-door session of the security council to consider all available routes to bringing the violence in the country to an end.

According to Christine Schraner Burgener, who said she was open to negotiations with junta leaders: “If we wait only for when they are ready to talk, the ground situation will only worsen. A bloodbath is imminent.”

Her plea comes two months after the start of the military coup, as an alternative civilian government, the CRPH – which was set up by MPs in hiding following the coup - seeks an alliance with armed ethnic minority groups in a bid to form a federal army.

With casualties soaring, some have raised concerns of a civil war as frequent clashes between security forces and protesters escalate in violence.
