India: PM Modi to scratch contentious laws impacting farmers

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to repeal three contested laws which affect farmers, in comments made during a televised statement from New Delhi on Friday.
“Today I have come to tell you (farmers) and the nation that we have decided to repeal the three farm laws. By the end of this month we will complete the constitutional process (of repealing) in the Parliament,” he said.

Modi urged farmers protesting against the 2020 laws to leave Delhi and return to their home provinces. The legislation, which deregulates the sector, sparked major protests among farmers in India. Many smallholders say the laws make them vulnerable to competition against bigger enterprises.

The decision to repeal the laws was announced on a key Sikh holiday.
