Violence broke out between Kashmir police and Shiite Muslims who had gathered for an annual Muharram procession, despite it being disallowed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, in Srinagar on Tuesday.
Tear gas was seen being fired into crowds of procession participants who had broken through the barricades previously set up by police, with physical violence also breaking out between the two sides.
Several members of the public were reportedly detained, with several journalists also allegedly attacked by the police.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, with mourners coming together for the first ten days in remembrance of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Since the 1990’s, Muharram processions in Srinagar have been banned for security reasons, however, the processions have continued in areas where Shia Muslims reside.
