Demonstrators gathered in Delhi, Friday, to protest against Muslim violence in the state of Tripura and to demand the immediate withdraw of a case against two lawyers that investigated attacks against the Muslim community last month.

“We are protesting in the solidarity of and support of our advocate Mukesh and advocate Ansar Indori recently they are the part of the fact-finding team visiting in the Tripura for finding the fact on the recently communal violence especially against the Muslim community in Tripura,” said Shaikh Jilani, from the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation.

“Is presenting the fact is a crime in India? My question is for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, I want to ask them if presenting facts and truth is the crime of new India,” Jilani asked.

The West Agartala Police invoked the controversial Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) to prosecute Delhi-based human rights lawyers Mukesh and Ansar Indori over their report disclosing attacks on shops and homes belonging to members of the Muslim community in Tripura.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Shaikh Jilani, National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation: “We are protesting in the solidarity of and support of our advocate Mukesh and advocate Ansar Indori recently they are the part of the fact-finding team visiting in the Tripura for finding the fact on the recently communal violence especially against the Muslim community in Tripura.”

SOT, Shaikh Jilani, National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation: “Is presenting the fact is a crime in India? My question is for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, I want to ask them if presenting facts and truth is the crime of new India? Tell me, what is this?”

SOT, Sucheta De, All India Central Council of Trade Unions: “It is the (Indian right-wing Hindu organisation) VHP that called for a rally and after the communal violence started. So it is direct political targeting because they went for fact-finding, they went to see what happened, and they went to preach and to bring out the facts and when they were in Tripura they said peace-making attempts should be taken between the communities. So it is a part of the same governance model where you first attack the political opposition, you target the minorities and then you threaten and intimidate and slap false cases against anyone who speaks the truth.”
