Residents in the state of Tamil Nadu braced for more floods after heavy rainfalls hit the area with reports that excess water had to be released from Poondi water reservoir, Friday, adding up to the excess level in the Kosasthalaiyar river.

According to local reports, at least 30 people died with dozens missing in the country since the rainfall and floods started, with National Disaster Relief Force teams deployed to the worst-hit areas.

SOT, Selvakumar, Local villager (Tamil): “People are facing a lot of issues because of these floods, even we are finding it difficult to get clear water and food. No authorities have visited our places yet.”

SOT, Selvakumar, Local villager (Tamil): “It’s more than a week since the flood water entered our houses but no one came forward to help us. So with the help of the village youth, we are trying to pump out the water by using heavy motors.”

SOT, Sababathi, Local Resident (Tamil): “It’s not the first time it’s happening, during every monsoon our houses get submerged like this. It’s been like this for the last three days.”

SOT, Sababathi, Local Resident (Tamil): “We stored food and water in advance, so we managed for the last few days, but people living in lower areas are most affected and most of them have left their houses.”
