India: Chennai submerged in water as deadly floods hit Tamil Nadu

People and vehicles were seen struggling to move on roads submerged in water in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Saturday, after the state had been hit by floods that saw at least 14 people dead.

The floods first started on November 7, with evacuation provided by India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) still ongoing.

According to local reports, Chennai saw 810 mm of rainfall between October 1 and November 12, twice higher than average.

SOT, Manjula, Local (Tamil): “Water entered our houses in the middle of the night. When it reached our cot we woke up and moved to a safer area. All the belongings in the house were submerged in the water. We locked our house and stayed in my brother’s place. After a day of rain, we cleaned everything but in the recent rain again the entire house got submerged. We are bringing a can of water from that end.”

SOT, Munniraj, Local, (Tamil): “The government is bringing ordinance for the benefit of the people, but the authorities are not carrying out their job properly. No officials from the government side to monitor the works and to check whether the work is happening or not. When officials are not monitoring, how will workers do their job? Authorities are not checking whether the garbage is cleared and the waterlogging is cleared, we can’t blame the government, but the government should take action against the [local] authorities. It was like this for a week. We are daily workers, how can we survive?”
