Several members of Indigenous Bantu communities native to Indonesia, also called ‘Baduy,’ received their first COVID-19 shots as seen in the Lebak district of the Banten province on Friday.

As residents went on with their daily lives, carrying wood and caring for children, a medical worker provided vaccinations in the village.

According to local authorities, there are currently about 11,800 Baduis living in 68 villages. Although the Baduis settlement area has so far been free of COVID-19, its residents have been offered vaccinations.

SOT, Baduy community member (Indonesian): “I often go to Jakarta, and the officer in the border often is asking a letter proving I already got vaccinated, so that is why, I am willing to get vaccinated. So, as today, there is a vaccination programme, then I join.”
