Archive footage shows the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Archbishop of Cape Town Desmond Tutu with High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay arriving at a press conference in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2013.
Archive footage also shows snippets of a press conference delivered in New York City in 1986, two years after the Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for combating apartheid in his country.
The former Archbishop spent his life advocating for civil rights and speaking out against inequality, corruption, and oppression.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reacted Tutu’s death, expressing that he was a ‘towering global figure for peace and an inspiration to generations across the world,’ during a statement issued on Sunday.
“Although Archbishop Tutu’s passing leaves a huge void on the global stage, and in our hearts, we will be forever inspired by his example to continue the fight for a better world for all,” said Guterres.
Desmond Tutu died at the age of 90. His passing was announced on Sunday by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
