IOC President Thomas Bach confirmed that he absolutely plans to meet with Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai after her sexual assault allegations against the former Chinese vice-premier Zhang Gaoli. The comments came during a questions and answers session after a speech at the IOC’s 139th session in Beijing on Thursday.
The tennis player disappeared from public view early in November after denouncing a case of sexual assault against the former Chinese government official.
Footage published by Chinese state-affiliated media was published on November 21, in which the player purportedly appeared at the opening ceremony of a tennis match in Beijing. Shuai subsequently withdrew her allegations, but that has not stopped the controversy, as her WTA tennis colleagues continue to speak out over the issue.
“This can only be achieved if you take contact. If you do not take contact, if you just make a declaration about the status, you don’t get any further, normally. This is why we took this contact, then in order to find out as much as possible whether the basic, or maybe the most important human right, her physical integrity, is assured. And what better way than to have a personal meeting? This is why already in the first meeting, I took the initiative and said I want to meet her personally once I arrive here in China,” stated Bach.
Bach was also questioned on China’s human rights record, especially regarding treatment of Muslims in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. The subject has led to calls for athletes and diplomats to boycott the Winter Games.
“With regards to your second question about the Uyghur population. There the position of the IOC, must be, given the political neutrality, that we are not commenting on political issues. Otherwise if we are taking a political standpoint, and we are getting in the middle of tensions, disputes and confrontations of political powers, then we are putting the games at risk,” answered Bach when questioned on the issue.
