Iran: Alleged leader of US-based militant group goes on trial in Tehran

A US resident and Iranian-German national who is allegedly the leader of a US-based militant group in Iran was put on trial in a Tehran court on Sunday.

The 66-year-old is accused of leading the Tondar (literally Thunder in Farsi) group which has carried out attacks in Iran, one in 2008 in a mosque in southern Iran that killed 14 people and injured hundreds.

Sharmahd whose family says is only a spokesperson for the monarchist Kingdom Assembly of Iran was allegedly kidnapped in Dubai by Iran-aligned forces.

The ‘Kingdom Assembly of Iran’ is an Iranian exile monarchist opposition group based in Los Angeles, United States which seeks to overthrow the Islamic Republic and restore the Iranian monarchy under a new dynasty.

This group was started in 1999 by a person named Fathollah Manouchehri under the pseudonym of Frood Fouladvand. But after Manouchehri’s disappearance in January 2007, Jamshid Sharmahd became the leader of this group, allegedly receiving support from the US and Israeli intelligence services.
