Iran: Christian Armenian minority hold mass on NYE in Tehran

Members of the Armenian Christian minority welcomed the New Year with a mass at St. Sarkis Cathedral in Tehran on Friday.
Dozens of worshippers gathered at the cathedral with clerics holding a ceremony.
“God willing, we will live in peace, [I hope that] the United States will lift these sanctions and we, Armenians, will be able to have the best life in Iran,” said George Davood, an Iranian Armenian Christian.
Armenian Christians make up around one per cent of Iran’s total population, with the New Year’s service at St. Sarkis Cathedral in Tehran being one of the biggest events for the Armenian Apostolic Church.

If there was a ceremony, they would not hold it inside the church, and they would not let it be a gathering. But, well, this year, because a lot of people got vaccinated, things got a little better. Because of this, due to the fact that people follow the protocols, more ceremonies are held, and we are allowed to come and participate in the ceremonies.”
