Iran: 'Sport is separate from politics' - Iran joins 2022 Winter Olympics despite boycotts

Iran has decided to join the 2022 Winter Olympics next February despite several countries’ boycotts, including the United States, against the Games in Beijing, as seen in Tehran on Wednesday.

Skiiers could be seen training by riding down the slopes, as well as signing banners in anticipation of the upcoming games.

“We all go there to show that sport is separate from politics, and that the people of the world have no problem with each other, and that they can live together in peace, friendship, and tranquility,” said Hossein Saveh Shemshaki, an Iranian Alpine Skier.

Shemshaki’s sentiment was repeated by Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri, Chief of Iran’s National Olympic Committee.

“I, as the chairman of the Olympic Committee, will also be present in Beijing for the opening ceremony, to convey the message in practice that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not be influenced by the United States under any circumstances,” said Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri.

As the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics near, several countries, including the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, and Lithuania, have announced a diplomatic boycott of the competition.
