Iran: State-approved dating app launches in bid to boost marriage rates

A state-approved Islamic dating app launched in Tehran on Tuesday, aimed at tackling declining birth rates and the rising age of marriage.

The app, called Hamdam, the Farsi for ‘companion,’ was developed by the Tebyan Cultural Institute to help users find spouses for ‘permanent marriage.’ According to Iranian officials the app is the only legal online dating platform in the country.

“Our matchmaking system started six years ago with 70,000 active installations that we had in the application. We have reached 3,700 successful marriages. After the platforming of systems and obtaining advanced technologies and platforms, we sought to move the system towards greater mechanisation and facilitation. That’s why we came to produce the Hamdam platform,” said Alireza Dehfouli, the the Tebyan Innovation Centre’s deputy.

Users must verify their identity and go through ‘psychological’ testing before they can browse potential candidates. When a match is made, the app will introduce the families of each user and provide a consultant for the couple for four years.

The platform’s managing director Zohreh Sadat Hosseini said the app avoids ‘negative aspects’ of other unauthorised apps.

“We do not want to experience the damage that is on other unauthorised websites, as people there register with fake identities and incorrect information and sometimes provide conditions for fraud and deception. We do not want those issues to happen in the Hamdam application, so we consider verification very important and people must have a real identity,” she said.

The Iranian parliament passed a ‘Population Growth and Supporting Families” bill in March to provide financial incentives for marriage and encourage couples to have more children. Approval by the Guardian Council is pending.

Nearly 7,000 people have had their information verified and their profiles verified. We do not want those issues to happen in the Hamdam application, so we consider verification very important and people must have a real identity.”

In Companion Finder, applicants can register, complete registration forms, upload their credentials, and complete psychological tests. After this step, the information of each profile is checked by experts, verified and if it is approved, from then on the person can log in to the system, search in the database, use the system’s free offers, identify the appropriate case, and request an introduction. When that person sends a request, the other person can also look at the information of the first person and, if desired, that person can confirm, so that the referrer will begin the introductory part.”

SOT, Zohreh Sadat Hosseini, Hamdam platform managing director (Farsi): “The referrer contacts, talks and informs the two young people to introduce them so that they can have the necessary supervision and support by their families during the introduction, and finally the referrer follows every case closely until they reach a conclusion. If the result is positive, it leads to marriage, and if the result is negative, eventually the person comes back in the same process and tries to identify and choose another case.”
