Footage filmed on Tuesday shows heaps of rubbish and rotting fish floating in the rivers of Hindiya and Rashidiya inside the city of Karbala, as well as in Lake Milh in the west of the city.

The phenomenon of water pollution and fish deaths is repeated every year in Karbala, with crowds heading to visit the shrine of Imam Hussein in what is known as the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

“As a preliminary diagnosis, and through autopsy, it was found that there is environmental pollution due to the excess of stale water dumped during the religious Arbaeen al-Hussein ceremony,” said Doctor Afkar Abbas, a member of Karbala Veterinary Department.

“The overcrowding happening as a result of the number of visitors that exceeds the capacity of the Karbala Governorate leads to stale water being pumped into the drains and rivers, which leads to the death of fish,” added Abbas.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage to the holy city of Karbala marks the end of forty-day-long mourning after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein - the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad.

There must be good cooperation for every visit in the Governorate to succeed. Unfortunately, this problem reoccurs during visits every year because there is no cooperation between the pilgrimage processions and service departments in the city. Preserving the environment is the duty of each resident and whoever caters for the pilgrims.”
