French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s ambassador to Afghanistan would return to Paris, during a press conference in Dublin, as he met with Irish leaders.
“For security reasons, the French ambassador will not be staying at the moment in Afghanistan, Macron said. “He will be based in Paris for as long as we deem necessary in order to guarantee his security.”
As part of the visit, Macron met with Irish President Michael D. Higgins at his formal presidential quarters in Dublin and spoke with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin, with Macron and Martin later holding a press conference.
Topics covered by the leaders during discussions included Brexit, international taxation and the situation in Afghanistan. The Ireland-France Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was also signed by ministers during the visit.
Macron’s visit in Ireland counted towards the French leader’s electoral pledge to visit all EU member states before the end of his tenure.

SOT, Michael Martin, Irish Prime Minister: “We both strongly welcome the Ireland-France Joint Plan of Action, signed today by ministers Coveney (Simon Coveney, Minister for Defence of Ireland) and Le Drian (Jean-Yves Le Drian, French Foreign Minister), setting out an ambitious programme of cooperation across the wide policy spectrum of areas where we have much to gain from, intensifying our work together.”
SOT, Michael Martin, Irish Prime Minister: “Naturally, the extremely difficult and concerning situation in Afghanistan was very much on our minds. France have been extremely helpful in supporting our efforts to secure the safe return of Irish citizens and their family members, including in mobilising our team and on the ground in Kabul airport.”
SOT, Michael Martin, Irish Prime Minister: “The European Union has demonstrated commitment, patience and creativity in its work to implement the Withdrawal Agreement and the Protocol. With the right political will, I believe that it will be possible to find sensible solutions to some of the outstanding issues, within the framework of the Protocol.”
SOT, Emmanuel Macron, French President (French): “Just as we speak, we are being confronted with a very tense situation [at Kabul airport and Afghanistan] which of course leads us to co-ordinate with our American allies and to call each and every one to be extremely prudent in the context we do not control, as we know. But here allow me to say once again that it’s been an honour for France to lead these evacuations, to conduct them as we can and we will continue to do so as much as we can. It’s been very difficult over the past few hours and my thoughts go to our troops as well as to the families and all those who are trying to protect their lives and to leave this country while some explosions happened over the past few hours and minutes.”
SOT, Emmanuel Macron, French President (French): “For security reasons, the French ambassador will not be staying at the moment in Afghanistan. He will remain ambassador, we will still have an ambassador and a team and an embassy. We are not recognising the regime [Taliban authorities], but we do recognise and continue to work with the country but for security reasons, he will be based in Paris for as long as we deem necessary in order to guarantee his security and also that will depend on the guarantees we will get from the Taliban.”
