The Israeli government adopted a state budget for the first time after three years of political deadlock, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced during a Monday session in Jerusalem.

“After three years of neglect, this morning we have brought the most daring and competitive budget, that gives the most assistance to the weaker sectors and that is most concerned about the future of our children, in years”, Bennett said.

The political crisis in Israel led to four general elections in two years and ended 12 years of Benjamin Netanyahu’s uninterrupted rule.

The budget will be handed for further approval to the Israeli parliament. If the Knesset fails to approve the document by November 4, the new government will be dissolved and Israelis will return to polls.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Naftali Bennett, Israeli Prime Minister (Hebrew): “Members of the cabinet I am, we are, finance minister and all of us are bringing the budget of the State of Israel for the years 2021 and 2022 to vote. Who is in favour? Who is against? Who abstain? Ladies and gentlemen, Israel has a budget. A budget of a government that cares. After three years of stalemate, Israel is returning to work. I would like the ministers to understand the nature of the moment: After three years of neglect, this morning we have brought the most daring and competitive budget, that gives the most assistance to the weaker sectors and that is most concerned about the future of our children, in years. In 2021, we are sowing the future of our children and grandchildren for 2051.”

SOT, Naftali Bennett, Israeli Prime Minister (Hebrew): “We are building a light rail in the greater Tel Aviv metropolitan area, bringing in competition regarding consumer goods and food, and kashrut supervision. We are preventing the bankruptcy of the pensioners in Israel. We are boosting public health in Israel. We are giving administrative freedom to school principals; they will be able to allocate money to different causes. For the first time we are building homes for autistic children and are seeing to a healthy diet for Israel’s children.”

SOT, Naftali Bennett, Israeli Prime Minister (Hebrew): “The budget reflects concern for all citizens of Israel and does not serve any narrow sectorial interest.”

SOT, Naftali Bennett, Israeli Prime Minister (Hebrew): “Approval of the budget will also assist government stability. We are a government of four year. I suggest everyone to get used to this idea. To both coalition and opposition members. The budget will enable ministers to turn vision into reality in their ministries. At the outset, we said that this government would deal with the public and not itself. We said it - and we did it. Good luck to us all.”
