Israel: Clashes erupt at Jerusalem rally following Palestinian family's eviction from Sheikh Jarrah

Clashes erupted between Israeli police forces and solidarity activists rallying outside the house of Jerusalem’s mayor, Moshe Lion, showing support to the Palestinian families evicted from the Sheik Jarrah neighbourhood, as seen in Jerusalem’s Rehavia on Wednesday.

Activists condemned the eviction and subsequent demolition of the Salhiya family’s home in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood.

Police officers were seen trying to forcibly disperse a crowd of about two dozen protesters with signs depicting images of the demolished home while chanting slogans. Six protesters were reportedly arrested.

Earlier this week, residents of the demolished building held a standoff with authorities who came to evict them. Police eventually backed off but returned on Wednesday at dawn.

Nearly 300 Palestinians in the Sheik Jarrah neighbourhood are facing eviction after Israeli courts rejected their claims to be allowed to stay in homes where they have lived for decades.

SOT, Mossi Raz, Meretz party politician: “We came here to protest in front of the residence of the Mayor of Jerusalem in this terrible weather against the terrible crime that was committed this night in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood. We do not agree with these evictions. We do not agree to demolish the homes of people. We do not agree with the differentiation in the policy between Jews and the Palestinian citizens of Jerusalem.”

SOT, Mossi Raz, Meretz party politician: “The mayor should stop immediately all this policy of evictions. He should compensate immediately those people and let them go back to their homes and build their homes again.”
