Israel: Military court convicts Spanish aid worker for funding banned Palestinian militant group

An Israeli military court sentenced a Spanish aid worker to 13 months in prison and to a fine of roughly 16,000 dollars (14,000 euros) on Wednesday in the Ofer military base near Ramallah.

The woman, identified as Spanish citizen Juana Rashmawi, confessed in a plea bargain to fundraising a West Bank charity which was affiliated to a banned Palestinian militant group, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

According to Rashmawi’s lawyer Avigdor Feldman, the Israeli military court upheld the sentence sought by prosecutors as part of a plea deal which was reached last week.

SOT, Avigdor Feldman, Lawyer for Juana Rashmawi: “The pre-bargain was to get 13 months in prison. She’s already served about eight months and she will pay a fine of 15,000 shekels (4,310 euros). I hope that she will be reduced a third of her sentence and then she could be released in two weeks or so.”

SOT, Avigdor Feldman, Lawyer for Juana Rashmawi: “The court judge’s decision today which accepted our plea bargain is stressing, very clearly, that our client Miss Rashmawi was not involved in any organisation which was outlawed by the Minister of Defence. Even she did not know that the aid organisation passed money to the PFLP and we don’t know whether the organisation really passed because no proof was given about it, who got the money, which money, nothing.”

SOT, Avigdor Feldman, Lawyer for Juana Rashmawi: “It’s very bad, the Minister of Defence, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gantz, and Lipid used this woman, 63 year old Spanish national, used to present to the world a very false argument that she admitted that the PFLP was operating the human rights organisation, the six human rights organisations which were outlawed by the Minister of Defence.”
