The longest partial lunar eclipse of the last 580 years was visible in the heavens on Friday. Russian cosmonaut Petr Dubrov captured the phenomenon via timelapse imagery from the ISS.
According to Roscosmos, up to 99.1 percent of the moon’s disk was in the shadow of the Earth. The spectacular phenomenon lasted three hours and 28 minutes. It is the longest partial eclipse of the Moon since the 15th century.
A lunar eclipse takes place when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up so that the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. During this time, part of it appears to ‘disappear’ into the sky.
The celestial body may also appear red as the only sunlight reaching the Moon passes through the Earth’s atmosphere. This phenomenon is often called the ‘blood moon.’
