Manager of the France national football squad Didier Deschamps stated that he was happy with the team’s performance and that ‘the best vitamin is winning matches,’ after France beat Spain 2-1 to win the Nations League final with goals from Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema, as seen on Sunday in Milan.
During the first half of the match at the San Siro, ‘Les Bleus’ struggled to get a hold of the ball dominated by the La Roja team, who took the lead with a goal from Mikel Oyarzabal.
The French squad fired up once footballer Benzema scored a goal one minute later and beat the Spanish team with a second goal from Mbappe.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Didier Deschamps, Manager of France national football team (French): “What is behind us, stays behind. The players proved that they are still performing at a high level, we can have some matches which we cannot manage from A to Z, and in September we drew two matches, but the balance was still positive. Here we had to face two really good European teams. Belgium is the best team and then Spain today, and even if they were missing a few players they can cause us problems. Now the best vitamin is winning matches, and even better when there is a title at stake. There was no loss of confidence, if we were lacking confidence against those two teams, I would not have been here in Milan today to play a final, let alone to win the Nations League.”
SOT, Didier Deschamps, Manager of France national football team (French): “Karim is an essential player, he has proven it in these two matches. His quality is quite obvious to see, he is playing along the lines of how he has been performing with Real Madrid. And he has this rage to win, he is here for this, and his teammates can feel it. I am very happy for the whole team, and I am personally happy for him. He needed this, obviously I don’t think that he will play four or five more tournaments (with France).”
SOT, Luis Enrique Martinez, Spanish head coach (Spanish): “What I know is that we were able to win against the European champions and play almost evenly against the world champions. So for the players and the team that is good. Of course every time for me it will be more difficult to pick the team and that’s good for me and for us. The important thing is that the team maintains its personality and will to win.”
SOT, Luis Enrique Martinez, Spanish head coach (Italian): “It was a shame once we scored that opening goal that France went up the other end and concede because that was when France were at their weakest when we scored. That was the only regret that we can have. What are we missing (to win a trophy)? We’re not missing anything. We still need to keep that confidence over the coming months and try and press ahead with what we’ve been doing.”
