Italy: Farmers protest ahead of G20 agricultural meeting in Florence

Hundreds of farmers turned out for the ‘Land march’ demonstration, promoted by farmers, environmentalists and social organisations ahead of the G20 agricultural meeting in Florence, on Saturday.

The demonstrators marched through the streets of the city of Florence before heading to Mondeggi, a farming and social area located south of the city where farmers grow organic farming products while opposing the sale of a public agricultural estate by the city’s council.

“We are taking part in this march, inspired by the Zapatista Gira, to symbolise how we leave the city, how we leave Florence to go to the countryside, to Mondeggi, a reality freed from agribusiness, of care and self-management through agroecology,” explained a protester taking part in the event.
