Italian health minister Roberto Speranza said G20 countries were working to sign an agreement which would ensure COVID-19 vaccines reach the world’s poorest nations. He spoke in Rome at the end of the first day of the summit by officials from the group of leading economies.
“The commitment of this ‘Pact of Rome,’ on which we are working, is to build the conditions so that the vaccine will be a right for everyone and not a privilege for some. I think this is a battle that all present countries agree on, and on which we will continue working tomorrow, with the aim of finishing with declaration, signed and shared by all countries involved,” said Speranza.
The official also held separate meetings with the health ministers of the UK, India and Russia on the sidelines of the event.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Roberto Speranza, Italian health minister (Italian): “I want to give you a quick update on today, which was a very positive and intense day. During the first session there was input from all the major international agencies and from all the ministers present, as well as those not present, who were able to send their vision and opinion via a video call. The conditions are right for us to be able to write the ‘Pact of Rome.’” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*,

SOT, Roberto Speranza, Italian health minister (Italian): “For me the ‘Pact of Rome’ means a battle to grow the strength of our national health services. Invest more in our national health services. It means a very significant change of pace, which allows us to defend the universal approach of our national health services. If a person is sick, they need to be cured independently from their economic condition, independently from the place they were born, independently from the colour of their skin. The ‘Pact of Rome’ has this point as essential, and of course, in terms of the battle with COVID, this point becomes the challenge to take the vaccine everywhere, also to the more fragile countries.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Roberto Speranza, Italian health minister (Italian): “Today we have very strong inequalities. There are the richer and more developed countries that have a very significant percentage of vaccinations and keep going in this direction, but there are countries that are behind. The commitment of this ‘Pact of Rome,’ on which we are working, is to build the conditions so that the vaccine will be a right for everyone and not a privilege for some. I think this is a battle that all present countries agree on, and on which we will continue working tomorrow, with the aim of finishing with declaration, signed and shared by all countries involved. Thanks for all your work until now, and we’ll see each other in a few hours. Thanks.”
