Trade unions and left wing activists gathered in Rome on Saturday to denounce a rally against the government’s ‘Green Pass’ policy held last week by far-right groups, including the Forza Nuova party.
The ‘Green Pass’ health certificate is a form of evidence of vaccination or recovery from COVID-19. The certificate may also be used to present evidence of a negative test result.
Last Saturday saw protesters, which included a number of right-wing elements, hold a protest against the government’s plan to make the ‘Green Pass’ mandatory across all workplaces.
During the protest, clashes broke out with the police and the headquarters of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL) trade union were stormed.
Twelve people were either detained or arrested, among them Forza Nuova leader Giuliano Castellino, according to local authorities.
Some politicians called for the ban of the far-right Forza Nuova party in the aftermath of the protest.
The ‘Green Pass’ has become compulsory across workplaces in Italy since Friday, with workers being required to present a valid form of the certificate. Workers who fail to comply with the requirement are set to be sent home without pay.
