Italian prime minister Mario Draghi offered a heartwarming tribute to the late former European Parliament president and his close friend and colleague Davide Sassoli on Tuesday. Draghi gave the speech in front of parliament.

“In the name of the government, as well as my own, I want to remember Sassoli, most of all as Italian. Italian and protagonist, at the service of Europe, of his institutions, and his citizens. As the president of the European parliament, his rare abilities to combine idealism and mediation made him a protagonist during one of the most difficult periods in recent history. He was an aware and influential voice in the defence of European values and the rights of those most in need,” stated Draghi.

David Sassoli died aged 65 from ‘serious complications’ after being hospitalised for pneumonia, his office announced in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

But also the passion for the profession of journalism. Which made him, many times, known and loved by all Italians. His civil spirit, his ability to listen, which helped him throughout his political journey, earned the respect of many colleagues in his party, as well as many from the opposition.”

To remain together the European institutions have to, first of all, be close to their citizens, and progress with dialogue regarding the topics they choose to confront. And it is parliament that should be the place for this dialogue and this discussion. It’s in parliament that Europe can grow and get stronger. And it is in parliament that his words should be promoted again, democracy, multilateralism, cooperation, in the face of the temptation of populism and authoritarianism.”

SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian prime minister (Italian): “And most of all, during a public health and economic crisis, like the one we are all still living, Sassoli wanted a Europe that was capable or achieving results, even immediate ones. He wanted to protect his citizens, to promote their wellbeing, to help them to build their own futures. Sassoli never stopped fighting for the results he achieved in these years. From the Brexit agreement, to the ambitious plans in defence of the climate, to the fight against the pandemic, to the creation of the Next Generation EU programme, and the plans for national recovery. His efforts were extraordinary, and they defined Davide, and an important act needs to be put in place to work on the priorities that we decided together.”

SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian prime minister (Italian): “For Sassoli these efforts were all part of a true objective. The construction of a social Europe, aware of the needs of workers and those most in need. The European project that we aim to construct, he said, has to be concentrated on the fight against poverty and on the reduction of inequalities. It must care about people’s dignity such as migrants who try to reach Europe. The EU has to put shared politics into play in this case, which don’t just leave the countries on the coast alone. The values we hold, among close ones, aren’t indestructible, Davide Sassoli reminded us of this in one of his recent speeches. During his life, Davide held these values, he defended them and he promoted them, and now it’s up to us to continue to do so. Thank you.”
