LIVE: Von der Leyen holds statement on passing of EU parliament pres David Sassoli

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen holds a press conference in Brussels on Tuesday, January 11, following the passing of David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament.

According to his spokesperson, Roberto Cuillo, Sassoli had been in hospital since December 26 with “serious complications due to a disfunction of the immune system.” All official activities had been cancelled.

Sassoli had suffered from leukaemia in the past and was struck by a severe case of pneumonia in September during a plenary session of the parliament and had to be hospitalised.
