European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed deep concern over a controversial high court ruling in Poland as she addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

Von der Leyen discussed three potential Commission measures to counter the court ruling.

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also addressed the European Parliament during the session.

Poland’s opposition parties sparked concern of a potential ‘Polexit’ scenario following a ruling by Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal last week, which challenged whether Poland should accept full oversight from the EU’s courts. The ruling deemed aspects of EU law as infringing on Poland’s constitution.

Thousands attended protests throughout Poland against a potential ‘Polexit’ scenario and the ongoing crisis on October 8, following an appeal made by opposition leader Donald Tusk.
