Italy: Protesters rally at Quirinal Palace against Belusconi's presidential candidacy

Dozens of protesters gathered outside Rome’s Quirinal Palace on Tuesday to protest against the presidential candidacy of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi in Italy’s 2022 presidential election.
The rally, which took place outside of the formal presidential residence, was organised by Popolo Viola (Purple People), a political movement which opposes the former prime minister.
Italy’s next president will be chosen by parliament and regional representatives on January 24.
“Constitutionally, Berlusconi could be a candidate. But it would probably drop in no time because it should be condemned for all the [legal] processes he has going on,” said Gianfranco Mascia, a member of Popolo Viola.
“We believe that [the candidate for President of the Republic] should be not only an uncensored person, but a person without ongoing legal proceedings and without conflicts regarding his person,” added Mascia.
The 85-year-old Berlusconi has been involved in numerous legal cases and scandals during over two decades of involvement in Italy’s politics.

SOT, Vittoria Pagliuca, Protester (Italian): “It is not written, I am sorry for Berlusconi, that they have the duty to [commit] to Bunga Bunga. No, they have the duty to [commit] to discipline and honour.”

SOT, Protester (Italian): “This political Right is unpresentable but it is growing. If nothing is done to stop it, we will see Berlusconi, [as] President of the Republic. And this will be just the beginning of other episodes that I don’t want to imagine. Strength, strength.”

SOT, Vittoria Pagliuca, Protester (Italian): “Both legally and personally, if Berlusconi becomes President of the Republic, this would be a shame for Italy.”

SOT, Pancho Pardi, Politician (Italian): “There is a risk that Parliament will elect Berlusconi. The problem that we expose is this: Parliament can do it without knowing about dignity. What we say is very simple: If Parliament votes Berlusconi for the Quirinal, he will not be considered worthy for the rest of our lives.”
