The Arch of Janus was reintroduced to the public for the first time after 28 years long closure, in a special ceremony held in the Italian capital on Friday night.
The arch located in the Roman Forum Boarium was shut down following a car bomb explosion on July 27, 1993.
“It was built by the sons of Constantine when the father died in 337 AD. The monument is very particular because it has a rectangular base. This form is very rare in Roman architecture,” said Daniela Porro, special superintendent of Rome.
The eternal city’s only four-sided triumphal arch will officially reopen for visits from November 13 on.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Daniela Porro, Special Superintendent of Rome (Italian): “The Arch of Janus is one of the most important monuments of the Forum Boarium in Rome. It was built by the sons of Constantine when the father died in 337 AD. The monument is very particular because it has a rectangular base. This form is very rare in Roman architecture.”
SOT, Daniela Porro, Special Superintendent of Rome (Italian): “In 1993, on July 28, the arch was damaged by a bomb. An attack took place in Rome.”
SOT, Alda Fendi, President of Alda Fendi Foundation (Italian): “Nu-Shu was a language that existed 3,000 years ago. Chinese women used it to defend themselves against men’s violence. They spoke to each other with this secret language and thus men could not understand them”.
SOT, Raffaelle Curi, Curator of the performance (Italian): “The most important and serious thing is the homicides against women. On the part of the men there is a desire and envy of the female sex”.
