Voters were seen lining up outside La Piazza del Collegio Romano, a local high school and one of Roman polling stations on Sunday.

Voters are choosing between candidates Enrico Michetti or Roberto Gualtieri in the runoff vote for the next mayor of Rome.

The successful candidate will replace Virginia Raggi, who has been mayor for the past five years, becoming the first woman mayor in Rome’s history. Her performance was heavily criticised by voters, who expressed their disappointment with her term with a low number of votes at the ballot box a fortnight ago.

Raggi was knocked out of the mayoral race in the first round. The lists of Enrico Michetti, backed by mostly conservative parties, and Roberto Gultieri, backed by left-wing parties, will face each other at the polls

“The mayoral elections in Rome are decisive because it has been years of decline for the city,” stated local resident Paola Sollinno.

Poor management of public transport and waste are some of the main problems raised by Romans.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Father Luigi Lia, Local resident: “Gualtieri has quite a valid political experience. He has been to Europe and has been Minister of the Republic. I think he has more political experience than Michetti. He is also a valid person.”

SOT, Silvia Menicuzzi, Local resident (Italian): “One of them is very good. The other, from my point of view, is inappropriate for the role it should play.”

SOT, Paola Sollino, Local resident (Italian): “The elections to the mayor of Rome are decisive because there were years in which the city has suffered a decline. If there is someone who fixes the city and realises the needs of the city and values it, that would be fine.”

SOT, Antonio Ferroni, Local resident (Italian): “We can’t even walk with all these construction works underway. And there is a lot of traffic. Public transport, you have to wait three hours for public transport.”

SOT, Perafan De Rivera Costaguti, Local resident (Italian): “They have not presented a decent program. They haven’t even presented a program. They don’t know how the city works. They are nominated by the parties of the right and the left. They hope to win thanks to the vote on their political side and not thanks to the proposals they made.”

SOT, Massimo, Local resident (Italian): “They both talk about improving Rome. But then you have to see how they will act. Because we have the problem of cleaning the streets. You just have to look around.”
