Italian taxi drivers took part in a nationwide strike on Wednesday as they protested in Rome in large numbers.
The drivers were demanding better working conditions and protesting against Uber and car sharing services.
They also widely condemned deregulation introduced by the Italian government which they said hurts small independent businesses and benefits multinationals such as Uber.
During the demonstration, protesters marched from Piazza Esedra before making their way to the Italian parliament building in front of Piazza Venezia. No incidents were reported.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Taxi driver (Italian): “We will fight against this unjust law until it is rejected. The parliament, which is discussing the issue, should acknowledge responsibility. In case they do, they should respond to the protest (accordingly). It’s not only taxi drivers which have unaddressed issues about their services. When it comes to that, there is no going back for us.”
SOT, Taxi driver (Italian): “We will continue until the very end, we will continue fighting in a determined fashion until it will be possible to do so, in accordance with laws. Today it’s a first step. Surely we will see other similar protests in other cities like Milan, Turin, Naples.”
SOT, Taxi driver (Italian): “The real critical issue is the disbelief that comes with having to come down here to the square. The fact that taxis, thus public services, are here to defend 40,000 families of law-abiding workers who are simply here to tell the institutions: ‘Defend our honest work’.
SOT, Taxi driver (Italian): “That’s right, we are not looking to stop technology and progress. We are simply asking for it to be adjusted to the laws that are (already) in place in this sector. Don’t forget, we are taking part a public service which has administrative fees with a performance obligation. We are asking for those fundamental rules to be respected otherwise it will be a jungle and in a jungle our users are the first to be penalised.”
