An Italian government ban on giant cruise ships entering Venice’s Giudecca Canal and other nearby waterways came into effect on Sunday.

The canal leads to the historic centre of Venice, with its port just in front of St Mark’s square, a historic site that is especially popular among tourists. The ban was decreed on earlier in July after the UN cultural body UNESCO warned that the city could be put on its list of endangered heritage sites if the ships were permitted to enter the lagoon going forward.

One local expressed his support for the move which he called a ‘big success,’ saying that the city was sinking ‘faster and faster’ due to the big ships.

The move applies to large ships and cruise liners over 25,000 tons or longer than 180 metres (590 feet), with freight and small ship passenger traffic allowed to continue operating on the canal.

The city with its 150 canals is affected by regular floods and subsidence, with scientists warning about the negative environmental effects that the huge vessels have on the city and its surrounding waters.

Cruise ships are still allowed to visit Venice but have to dock at the city’s mainland industrial port of Marghera from Sunday on.

SOT, Luca Marangon, Resident: “I think that for the city the grandi navi (Italian for big ships) stop is a big success because of everything in the city is sinking and with the grandi navi, it was going faster and faster. Like that it’s better.”

SOT, Maurizio Torresan, Local worker: “The bigger ship, for my work it’s not going to change much. But probably for the other commercial activities it’s something. It’s a change. Because many tourists from the ship, they need to have a souvenir for, more souvenir cheap prices, two, three of them. But for my job is important another type of tourism.”
