A crowd of anti-Olympics demonstrators marched through Chofu, in the Tokyo Metropolis, on Thursday to protest the nation’s hosting of the 2020 Olympics, one day before the Games are set to kick off.
“Okay, no spectators. It’s, of course, one of the solutions, or the preventions. Also anyway, the biggest solution is to stop the Olympic Games. That is the biggest and most effective solution for stopping COVID-19,” said Yoko, one of the rally organisers.
Protesters demanded the Japanese government immediately stop the Games to prioritise the health and livelihood of Japanese people over the needs of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and sponsors’ financial interests.
Amid protests against the Olympics and a rise in COVID-19 cases within Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared another state of emergency in Tokyo until August 22. This decision means no fans, not even local Japanese attendees, will watch the games. The 2020 Summer Olympics are set to begin July 23 and last until August 8.

SOT, Yoko, Rally Organiser: “Secondly, the COVID new variant might be brought here in Japan. That is my biggest concern. So anyway, please close our gate and anyway, please stop the Olympic Games here in Tokyo.”
