Russia’s Olympic Committee (ROC) chief Stanislav Pozdnyakov said the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision to ban the use of Russian symbols at the Tokyo Olympics had not affected athletes’ results.
“The majority of experts agreed that - and the head of [Russian] state said that too - the CAS decision wasn’t a problem for the Russian sportsmen in terms of competitive result. And we can see it by ourselves,” he said during a press conference in Tokyo on Saturday.
Pozdnyakov also added that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) were satisfied with the implementation of the CAS decision by Russian sportsmen.
According to the ROC chief, the Russian team had already performed well, beating their result at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
“The common number of medals already shows that the goal was reached. Moreover, we estimate that in total with this number of medals we will take third place,” he mentioned.
According to the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, athletes from the Russian Federation cannot compete under the Russian national flag at the Olympic Games and World Championships until December 16, 2022.
Russian athletes can participate in competitions in a neutral status.
Russia is also deprived, for two years, of the right to claim to host sports events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as world championships. In addition, Russian officials are prohibited from attending major international competitions.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Head of Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): “As you remember, our aim was to perform better than in Rio de Janeiro [2016]. And the common number of medals already shows that the goal was reached. Moreover, we estimate that in total with this number of medals we will take third place. As for the gold medals, certainly, we didn’t expect such a highly successful performance from the Olympic hosts. As you can remember the previous hosts’ record was 16 gold medals, and today they have 24 if I’m not mistaken. So, again, the goal was not to take third place but to fight for it. And here, in these games, our team has demonstrated this ambition.”
SOT, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Head of Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): “No doping cases in our team. These are the results of the work that has been done in recent years. Of course, I congratulate our sports community on this, I congratulate the employees of the [Russian] Ministry of Sports, RUSADA [Russian Anti-Doping Agency], FMBA [Federal Medical-Biological Agency], who throughout this time, to the best of their strength and capabilities, fought against negative manifestations in sports.”
SOT, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Head of Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): “The CAS [Court of Arbitration for Sport] decision was strictly followed by all athletes and all members of the delegation. Just an hour ago we had a meeting with representatives of the International Olympic Committee and we were just discussing this situation. According to our colleagues, neither the International Olympic Committee, nor the organising committee, nor the WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency] representatives have any questions, there are no complaints about the implementation of the CAS decision regarding the participation of our team in the Olympic Games.”
SOT, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Head of Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): “The majority of experts agreed that - and the head of [Russian] state said that too - the CAS decision wasn’t a problem for the Russian sportsmen in terms of competitive result. And we can see it by ourselves.”
SOT, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Head of Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): “I would like to draw your attention to the fact that during all the Olympic Games there was not a single coronavirus case by our athletes in the Olympic Village or officials in the Olympic Village. Thus, I want to congratulate our entire delegation and all sports leaders on the fact that we have fulfilled the most important task: we have given the opportunity to all athletes here in Tokyo to compete and take part in competitions.”
SOT, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Head of Russian Olympic Committee (Russian): “You know very well that there are certain rules in such situations, and in accordance with these rules, the Brazilian team continues to participate in the Olympic Games. And the assessment, if it’s fair or not, can be given only after examination of a combination of various factors. Rather, there is an emotional assessment. But as for this case, I will comment in this way: I am very glad, and I said it before, that there are no doping cases in our team.”
