Japan: No COVID cases in Russian team – ROC chief Pozdnyakov ahead of Olympics

Russia’s Olympic Committee (ROC) chief Stanislav Pozdnyakov said there were no COVID-19 cases among the Russian team, at a press conference ahead of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Thursday.
“Everyone in the team is healthy, the medical centre is currently providing only the rehabilitation procedures, relapses of old injuries with which the athletes came here to the Games,” he added.
Pozdnyakov also noted that the team was moved to another apartment building after several complaints about the lack of comfort.
“Now our building is in the first row from the sea, overlooking the Tokyo Bay, it’s one of the four buildings with the best location in the village. This building is away from the transport, bus hub and the canteens, where there are very noisy air conditioners, industrial ones,” he said.
In spite of some complaints about the living conditions, the ROC head said the athletes approach the situation with humour, but no ‘malice.’

You need to understand that the Olympic village is always built for the residents of the host country. It’s clear that there are certain features of Japanese life, hygiene features if you like. Actually, these features clearly demonstrate the architectural differences between European and Japanese apartments. The overwhelming majority of athletes are absolutely ok with this, they treat this adequately – with humour, I like that our sports team jokes on this topic. But, as far as I understand, they joke without any malice, without any sarcasm, but rather just treat it with humour.”
