Japan: Former FM Kishida to become next Prime Minister after ruling party vote

Former Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida is seen as the country’s next Prime Minister after winning the governing Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) leadership election in Tokyo, Wednesday.
The footage shows Kishida celebrating the win along with the outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga after the former was announced the next leader of the party with a Parliament majority.
Suga steps down after one year in office following the LDP’s drop in rating, partly due to the decision to push on with the Tokyo Olympic Games despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

SOT, Yoshihide Suga, Japan Prime Minister (Japanese): “The term of office for us, the members of the House of Representatives, is becoming more and more imminent every day. Under the leadership of the new party president Kishida, we, the members and friends of the Liberal Democratic Party, must unite in order to win this battle. I would like to conclude my speech by asking for your cooperation. Thank you very much.”

First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the members and friends of the Party throughout Japan, the members of the Party organisation throughout Japan, and the staff of the Party Headquarters for their support during this election.”
