Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced this Friday he will not run for the presidency of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) but will rather dedicate himself to fight the coronavirus.
Suga explained that he was forced to make a decision during his political campaign and chose to step down to combat the current virus in Japan, which is still in a state of emergency and facing its worst COVID wave.
The politician declared that it is his responsibility to protect people’s lives and livelihoods, and that he will everything possible to achieve this.
The LDP is scheduled to hold its election on September 29, the winner of which is likely to hold the office of PM in the interim ahead of elections, since the party holds a parliamentary majority.

SOT, Yoshihide Suga, Prime Minister of Japan (Japanese): “At the LDP board meeting held a few minutes ago, I said that I would not run for the LDP presidency because I would like to devote myself to the fight against the novel coronavirus. For the past year since I became prime minister, I have been doing my best to tackle the various problems facing the country, especially the novel coronavirus. And the presidential election of the Liberal Democratic Party is supposed to start on the 17th of this month. As I myself planned to run for the office, I actually needed enormous energy when I thought about the corona measures and campaigning. In this context, it is still incompatible and we should choose one or the other. I have made promises to the public many times. I have made the decision that I want to work full-time to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. As prime minister, it is my responsibility to protect the lives and livelihoods of the people, so I will do my best to accomplish this. I would like to hold another press conference next week.”
