German Olympic Cycling sports director Patrick Moster was sent home, on Thursday, after shouting racist remarks while encouraging his athletes on Wednesday.

We also connected him by phone in order to exercise the rights of the person concerned, so to speak, in the sense of a professional hearing. We weighed all the arguments again with regard to the correct decision-making and in the end we came to the conclusion that he will no longer work as sub-team leader for Germany and will return to Germany soon.”

SOT, Alfons Hormann, German Olympic Federation President (German): “The fact that we, as team Germany, clearly and uncompromisingly stand for the Olympic values of respect, fair play, tolerance, even if he has plausibly explained to us and we also believe that it was anything but intent or corresponds to his basic ideas, he has crossed a red line, made an expression that is not tolerable. Therefore, after weighing up all the advantages and disadvantages, or rather all of the consequences, also for the BDR team [German Cyclists Association], we decided that he should no longer bear responsibility in our team.”

SOT, Alfons Hormann, German Olympic Federation President (German): “We can understand the criticism, but as I said, it is a far-reaching decision with great implications for him personally as well as for the team concerned and, last but not least, for the entire team Germany. Such decisions have to be carefully considered and made together, and such decisions should not be made in emotional and temporal proximity to the incident, which is why we deliberately wanted to deal with it with the necessary calm and distance. And that’s why we have implemented it today.”

SOT, Alfons Hormann, German Olympic Federation President (German): “From my conversations yesterday and today, the one we had with each other, I have taken the impression that personally it hits him hard, that he is disappointed with himself and his behaviour in that situation and that it is by no means a general conviction of his character. All those who have worked with him for weeks and months, sometimes for years, appreciate him as a very team oriented person of integrity who has never done anything like it. That’s why we’re sorry for him, but in the end it’s all about taking a clear position and protection for team Germany.”
