Nagoya residents shared their views on Thursday in response to the victory of former foreign minister Fumio Kishida in the leadership race of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The verdict was announced following a vote on Wednesday, with Kishida set to become Prime Minister on Monday. Kishida outperformed rival Taro Kono, Japan’s vaccination minister.

“The decision to elect a president is not really based on a person’s motivation or anything like that, because Japanese politics is just a matter of numbers,” explained Hirai, a resident.

“It doesn’t really matter who is elected, but I thought there would be a change if Ms. Takaichi (Sanae Takaichi) were to be elected. But since it is Mr. Kishida (Fumio Kishida), I think it will be short-lived,” added Hirai.

Former internal affairs minister Sanae Takaichi had unsuccessfully run as a contender against Kishida, which had she been successful, may have made her Japan’s first female prime minister.
“Personally, I was supporting for Mr. Kono (Taro Kono), but well, it is a little disappointing to him, but I hope that Mr. Kishida (Fumio Kishida) will change Japan for the better,” commented Sana, another local resident.

The LDP’s previous leader Yoshihide Suga resigned from his role as prime minister in early September following plummeting support over his government’s handling of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

SOT, Hirai, Resident (Japanese): “The decision to elect a president is not really based on a person’s motivation or anything like that, because Japanese politics is just a matter of numbers. It doesn’t really matter who is elected, but I thought there would be a change if Ms. Takaichi (Sanae Takaichi) were to be elected. But since it is Mr. Kishida (Fumio Kishida), I think it will be short-lived.”

SOT, Isogai, Resident (Japanese): “Since we are now in a situation where many new problems are coming up one after another, I think that if the president seems like a coordinating-type leader, there is a possibility that we will end up reacting after the event again. I think it would have been better if there’s someone who can make quick decisions, even making mistakes, but who can also resume things quickly.”

SOT, Ryo, Resident (Japanese): “I feel that he (Fumio Kishida) has more energy and vitality than Mr. Suga (Yoshihide Suga), so I have very high expectations for him in that aspect. I am looking forward to see his future skills.”

SOT, Sana, Resident (Japanese): “Personally, I was supporting for Mr. Kono (Taro Kono), but well, it is a little disappointing to him, but I hope that Mr. Kishida (Fumio Kishida) will change Japan for the better.”

SOT, Kamiya, Resident (Japanese):“Well, it will be difficult for him, but I am hopeful. I think we can only hope for the best in him.”

SOT, Masako, Resident (Japanese): “Anyway, I hope Japan’s economy runs well. Not about coronavirus. Apart from Covid, as long as the economy continues to run as before, there is no problem.”

SOT, Kazuha, Resident (Japanese): “Especially since I don’t think it will change no matter who becomes president, or rather prime minister, I don’t have much to think about.”
