A statue of the Olympic Rings nearby the Japan National Stadium has attracted dozens of sports fans eager to immortalise their moment at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics through a photo on Friday.
For some fans, the opportunity to pose for a photo allows for a close-up experience of the event amid heavy restrictions.
“It kind of makes us feel that we are this close to [the] Olympics. It’s actually in our city,” commented Chiko, a Tokyo resident.
The Tokyo Olympics are running through August 8, though members of the public cannot attend due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Chika, Tokyo resident: “Of course we’d like to get as close to the Olympics as possible. Actually, one of us already got a couple of tickets last year but unfortunately it was cancelled so she can’t get into the game to look at it. But yeah, it’s Friday and it’s [the] evening so we[‘re] just hang[ing] out to get as close to it as possible and we’ll take a couple of pictures around there.”
SOT, Chika, Tokyo resident: “So, it’s (the Olympics Rings) pretty symbolic so it kind of makes us feel that we are this close to [the] Olympics. It’s actually in our city.”
SOT, Tiffany, Yokohama resident: “I am from Jamaica, I live here in Japan in Yokohama to be specific. We’re here in this queue waiting to take pictures at the Olympic rings. Our intention, well, we live here but we had the intention of maybe viewing some races, you know, supporting our team: Shelly, Elaine and all the others there, but because of COVID we can’t, so we come to show our support, you know, enjoy the Olympics.
SOT, Maho, Tokyo resident: “I like [the] Olympic games and I like to watch sport games. Today, for my memory, I lined (queued) and I went to watch (see) [the statue], [I] took that picture before the Olympic marks.”
